About Beer Color Measurement
Beer color is measured using different standards around the world. The three main systems are:
- SRM (Standard Reference Method) - Used primarily in North America, measures the attenuation of light at 430nm wavelength through 1cm of beer
- EBC (European Brewery Convention) - European standard, approximately twice the SRM value
- °Lovibond - Originally used for measuring malt color, still commonly referenced in grain specifications
While these measurements provide objective color values, the actual appearance of beer can vary based on clarity, carbonation, lighting, and glass shape.
